The Screamers were my amongst my most fave live bands to shoot/dance and my fave to hang with off-stage. I took enough shots for an amazing Screamers book. On-stage, off-stage, back-stage, parties, the street, clubs . . . NO ONE was more photographable or fun. Screamers for more behind-the-scenes details and more photos. Dedicated to Tomata, RIP.

Screamers on bus bench on Sunset near Gower (Gower Gulch, where first cowboy/western films ever shot), Spring 1977. The number one fave shot according to those who lived through this era or love early LA punk. Totally spontaneous, no art director, no stylist, nothin' but a few friends taking pix. The wooden fence has early graffiti, "6.6.6." (which this Jewish girl didn't understand until everyone kept pointing it out: sign of the devil) and "surfers rule."
I had ONE frame, one chance to shoot this. Tomata started laughing and getting off on the little ol' lady. I kept telling him not to laugh, but he couldn't stop (and soon Tommy Gear joined in). Yeah, us punks were scary -- not! He later told she was reading a newspaper about aliens and was, in his words, "just too cute." That describes Tomata. What a character!

Screamers KK Barrett (production designer for “Marie Antoinette”), Tomata du Plenty and Tommy Gear, outside Bomp Records Store, on its opening day, April 9, 1977.
This holds a special place in my heart. It's only been published a few times, but it's a classic.
Look at their stance, attitude, and clothes. NO ONE looked nor sounded like them, nor gave such memorable no-budget fun parties like they. Tomata painted stripes on his pants and wore cowboy boots. Tommy loved to wear newspaper headlines as ties, and no one tore their shirt as artfully as KK.

Screamers Tommy Gear, KK Barrett and Tomata du Plenty outside Bomp Records, April 9, 1977. Breathtaking, just a perfect shot. All I had to do was "take the picture." [for you non-Hollywood musical fans, that's what Audrey Hepburn told Fred Astaire in "Funny Face."]

Screamers Tommy Gear, KK Barrett and Tomata du Plenty debut, Slash loft/office, May 28, 1977. My pal archivist David Jones pointed out David Brown's photo on the wall (taken by Slash's Melanie Nissen), completing the band. Looking at the negs, I wondered how I got through the crowd and shot from both sides of the band. I was too shy to be pushy, so I think people were nicer about that kind of thing then.

Screamers Tomata du Plenty screaming, Tommy Gear in Melanie Nissen's shot on wall, debut, Slash loft/office, May 28, 1977. I just discovered these rolls and it's hard to pick my faves, but this is very unique. I wish I had the wall space to frame this one, nice and large. It's so dynamic, as if Tomata is gonna break through the image. We miss him so . . .
