Joan Jett and Lita Ford
August 27, 1977, Whisky
The Runaways: Joan Jett and Lita Ford in
one of my all-time fave photos. Weirdos played too. |
Whisky or Santa
Monica Civic 1977?
The Runaways: Joan
Jett and Jackie Fox. Mark Martinez says Joan was wearing the
red jumpsuit she wore in Japan but at the Civic. I have color
slides and agree it's red. But I shot from various angles, from
the left and right side of the stage. I had to sneak my camera
into the Civic. How could I run around taking all those photos
and not get thrown out like I did trying to shoot Patti at the
Civic? I can see, by looking at the proof sheets, the stage
is high and big like the Civic. It's driving Mark and I nuts
-- doesn't make sense. Ah, if only someone kept notes!

[78-01 Joan and Rodney]
Polaroid of Rodney
Bingenheimer and Joan,
Jan, 78 I think. A really sweet photo of friends.

August 10 or October
21, 1977
Whisky backstage
Kim Fowley and Joan Jett. Same nights I
shot color with Ramones [previous page]. Did you catch the recent
Runaways documentary? It will tear your heart out. Joan didn't
participate, but Kim Fowley, in a bright yellow suit, spoke.
Try to see it and decide for yourself. It's hard for me to write
about it without crying. It's a real testimonial to Joan's integrity
and internal strength she persevered and is still rockin' out!
She followed her dreams, got out of that mess and triumphed.
A real inspiration! |

July 22, 1977, Slash Devo Party
Joan Jett dancing with Pleasant
Gehman at a party Slash magazine gave for Devo at their private
debut performance, July 22, 1977. I have lots of fun party pictures
of that night and another night at Farrah, Exene and John Doe's
apartment with Joan, Plez and others foolin' around. |
This is a placeholder.
I will post another shot from Devo party someday.

July 8, 1977, Weirdos, Slash Magazine Benefit,
Larchmont Hall
Bands performed at Larchmont Hall to raise
funds for Slash magazine. One time they made $72! Left to right:
Weirdos drummer (sometimes for Germs and Bags) Nicky Beat in
fake leopard coat, Germs Darby Crash when he was still Bobby
Pyn, wearing his safety-pinned pants from the shot I took of
him sitting in the gutter on Sunset Blvd, with strange white
makeup; Pat Smear of the Germs and Nirvana, Runaways Joan Jett,
Lita Ford and Rodney Bingeheimer. |

Larchmont Hall,
July 8, 1977
Darby Crash on the floor,
Michael Wilcox, who later played guitar with the Damned, is
on the right, Joan is standing next to Randy Kaye. Pat Smear,
of the Germs and Nirvana, is in the background, pointing at
the camera. |

July 8, 1977, Weirdos, Larchmont,
Slash Magazine Benefit
Lita Ford, ?, Joan Jett, Randy Kaye wearing
Runaways shirt and Mark Martinez.
Mark and I discussed if any of these were
at Devo party. My hunch is Mark is right: Joan and Lita at Larchmont,
and Joan dancing with Pleasant at Devo party. Why? Cos Lita
was only at Larchmont, no shots of her at Devo party. |

July 8, 1977,
Weirdos, Larchmont, Slash Magazine Benefit
Joan Jett laughing with my
best buddy, talented graphic artist, Mark Martinez. Mark says
it's Larchmont and he (and others) dropped acid. And never shared
with me?? Mark called me "The Acid Queen," but not
that night! |
