Fanzine: Slash

http://www.art-for-a-change.com/Punk/papers/slash.htm

Start at Mark Vallen's tribute to Slash. He not only created two of the most memorable covers, including the very last one, but he worked in the offices as a graphic artist. His memories, scanned covers, and the editorial transcriptions of the best voice to ever come out of punk, Claude "Kick Boy" Bessy will provide you with some food for thought and decrease your boredom. If anyone wants to know what true punk attitude is, start with Kick Boy's editorials. Then imagine a soothing French Norman accent and a seductive masculine man, and you can't even come close to what it was like to breathe the same air as Claude.

I contributed photos to Slash. I'll post some of those as well as some of my fave pages, graphically. As far as fave text, well, it was a treat to read it all. In your face and no holds barred, didn't matter if two people wrote opposing reviews of Devo, what mattered was intelligence and passion guided the words and photos. They, like myself, preferred Gang of Four to U2. Read it for yourself.

Slash magazine made its mark in so many ways: they covered all the new music, shows and parties. Their rebellious attitude, creative use of artists (showcasing Gary Panter, Lou Beach) and highly opinionated rants made them an integral part of the scene. But my fave part were the Slash benefits at Larchmont Hall and the parties. My fave person was Claude "Kick Boy" Bessy, although I could barely make it through his all caps editorials without feeling breathless. Hanging out with him told me everything I needed to know. His attitude, clothes, dancing, passion and zest for life was pure punk. I'll post more, but suffice to say, they mattered more than the LA Times, Herald Examiner or other mainstream press who purported to cover punk. Yeah, right.

A collage of my Devo party photos, July, 1977. A FABULOUSLY fun party given by Slash. I have TONS of shots of that party. A true gathering of punk's early movers and shakers.

I shot the Runaways, Joan Jett and Lita Ford, at the Whisky. The bottom shots are from the Punk Fashion Show, September 23 1977. I shot Trudie in the Tower Records parking lot, then Cherie the Penguin, Pleasant and Hellin Killer backstage at the Palladium. I don't know who the other women were.

ASK
first, you might make a friend. Use my photos so I benefit too. These are MY photos.
Got a cool site or blog? Maybe we can link up. Better to ask than get angry letter/email from people who will stop you.

ANY usage, especially commercial or editorial, of any purchased, licensed, or otherwise obtained print(s)/scans, etc is strictly prohibited. Violates STATE and FEDERAL laws. That means if you use my photos on something (t-shirt, mag, print, etc) and make money, you robbed me. You robbed everyone, including yourself, of money needed for my archive. How does that make you feel?? That's not how punks treat other punks, especially us pioneers!

That includes, but is not limited to, scanning, reproduction, distribution in any manner, publishing, merchandise, posting, broadcasting, transmitting (podcasts, online, existing or future technology), etc.

Play nice and we can play together. Using without linking, notifying me, etc is bad karma.
