Back Door Man: Don Waller

I have tons of fun photos of Don Waller and Phast Phreddie at parties to be posted. They were quite fascinating characters! Don Waller is one of two unhearalded early punk writers. The other is Phast Phreddie. I am glad to say they are still quite active in the music biz, writing from the heart and hip. In addition to writing comprehensive liner notes for various CDs, Don is a witty and concise music columnist for LA's City Beat (www.lacitybeat.com). His take on Coachella, 2005 had me in stitches. I asked him about his bands and here's his reply:

My band was the Imperial Dogs (1974-75). We were originally called Sugar Boy (1972), then White Light (1973), then the Imperial Dogs. We had a single "This Ain't The Summer Of Love" b/w "I'm Waiting For The Man" issued after the band broke up on Back Door Man Records 'cause the Blue Oyster Cult used the hookline "This ain't the Garden of Eden/This ain't the Summer of Love" for their song of the same title. (I'm still getting royalties for this!) [and the rumor I always heard it was "Don't Fear the Reaper." Always learning something new! jen]

The Imperial Dogs also released an album "Unchained Maladies: Live! 1974-75" on the Melbourne, Australia-based Dog Meat label in 1989. (Obviously, a long time after we broke up.) It's all live recordings of us playing Gazarri's or rehearsing in our garage in Carson.

BTW, Imperial Dogs guitarist Paul Therrio, his wife/bassist/acclaimed underground comic artist Mary Fleener, Tom Gardner, and a drummer named Rebecca Oleachea put together a band called the Wig Titans who released a CD titled "End Of The World" on their own 4Q2 label in 2002.

Paul and Mary and Rebecca kicked Tom out and now calling themselves the Wigbillies and just released a CD titled "Goin' Up The Mountain." Go to maryfleener.com for details.

More about Don, Phred and other BDM staff as time goes by . . .

ASK
first, you might make a friend. Use my photos so I benefit too. These are MY photos.
Got a cool site or blog? Maybe we can link up. Better to ask than get angry letter/email from people who will stop you.

ANY usage, especially commercial or editorial, of any purchased, licensed, or otherwise obtained print(s)/scans, etc is strictly prohibited. Violates STATE and FEDERAL laws. That means if you use my photos on something (t-shirt, mag, print, etc) and make money, you robbed me. You robbed everyone, including yourself, of money needed for my archive. How does that make you feel?? That's not how punks treat other punks, especially us pioneers!
