This day was one of the most significant in LA punk's early
history. I don't have time nor room to go into detail yet, but
the Damned made their public appearance after New York's Television
kicked them off the bill. The Weirdos made their public debut
with drummer Nickey Beat, soon to be a vital part of the whole
punk scene, whether helping run the Masque, drumming for the
Germs and Bags, and as Alice Bag's punk significant other for
quite some time. Plus he was a nice guy! Most significantly,
Pleasant dared the Germs to get on the bill with the Weirdos
at the Orpheum that night, along with San Diego's Zeros. And
the Damned showed up and I shot Capt. Sensible gigging with
the Weirdos (doing the Seeds "Pushing Too Hard.")
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (future Gun Club cult idol), Tommy Gear
of the Screamers, Backstage Pass, Back Door Man writer Phast
Phreddie partied with the crowd.
The Screamers and Backstage Pass were vital
to the Damned's survival in LA (as well as the fans, photographers
and writers). Capt Sensible stayed at the Screamers' Wilton
Hilton and others with members of Backstage Pass: Brian with
Genny Schorr (who shared an apt w/Marina del Rey) and Rat with
Joanna/Spock. I know more but can't say.
Have admit, when I took these shots, I didn't
know who was shagging whom! I just shot everyone!
One day I'll post shots from the party
the Screamers threw for the Damned which Blondie's Clem Burke
and Jimmy Destri attended.
So don't tell me LA wasn't part of the emerging
punk scene! And no matter what you read elsewhere, a photo is
worth a thousand words. |

Kathy Kato, on the left, was Chip Kinman's
girlfriend. She created a lot of the gear the Dils wore, such
as the hammer and sickle shirts and later, western shirts when
they were in Rank and File. Thanks to archivist David Jones
for the info! |

for details about this photo. It's when the Germs got on the
bill with the Weirdos, making their brief but legendary debut
at the Orpheum. |

Damned lead singer Dave Vanian with Marina
Del Rey of Backstage Pass. Marina was also a publicist at Ariola
Records and is one of the most brilliant women I have ever heard.
Her knowledge of modern art is unsurpassed.
She currently writes and produces movies
and her husband Mick writes and supervises music for the movies.
A true treasure. I'be been told she was one of the first to
sign on at the Masque, helping Brendan to raise enough cash
to get it going. |

Bassist Captain Sensibe, guiarist Brian James, drummer Rat Scabies
spitting beer into the air and singer Dave Vanian, future husband
of LA's Bags and Sisters of Mercy's bassist Patricia Morrison.
Way to go, Patricia! "We don't need the English,"
eh? (an early Bags song). |

published my first shots (against my own doubts) the one and
only Phast Phreddie. |

Once in awhile, I find faces in my negs
that leaves me breathless. I took a series of boring crowd shots,
but among them is this treasure.
That's future Gun Club cult icon Jeffrey
Lee Pierce on the left! Wow. Spock in the center. Stiff Records
founder and Damned, Elvis Costello and Graham Parker manager,
Jake Riviera in the back right, smiling and facing the camera,
while talking to blonde Greg Shaw. Rat Scabies is in the back
center, with Greg's first wife, Suzy Shaw, on the left back.
The man with the spiky hair and wrap-around sunglasses behind
Jeffrey is Tommy Gear of the Screamers.
